Peak District Mountain Biking Guide
THE DARK PEAK

The hills of northern Derbyshire are criss-crossed with ancient roads and flowing moorland singletrack. Fabulous descents come in all varieties ‚ fast, loose, rocky, rutted and rooty‚ and The Peak has a fierce collection of climbs: uphill slogs, loose uphill slogs, technical, loose and rocky uphill slogs ‚ most, thankfully, within easy reach of refuelling at local cafes and pubs. (Also of interest may be the White Peak Guide).

  CLASSICS
  Blacka Moor
An excursion onto the Moors west of Sheffield. This is a glorious tight little route that maximises the quality singletrack potential of the area. Route Grade: medium. Distance: 12.5km
  Chinley Churn
Starting at New Mills, the route climbes up and over Chinley Churn, a short, fast descent to a brilliant section of adventurous singletrack and a tough ascent followed by a fast track descent to the valley then up back over the hill before a varied descent to the Sett Valley Trail and New Mills. Route Grade: medium / hard. Distance: 15km
  Digley Circuit
Short, fast fun route and almost entirely lacking in level ground. A good intro to mountain biking or as a training circuit, excellent whatever the weather. Highly recommended as a night ride. Route Grade: medium. Distance: 11.5km
  Langsett
Exceptionally useful expresso-type route, offering concentrated enjoyment in a small but beautifully formed package. Ideal for the time-starved mountain biker. This is a great quality, super-varied moorland experience that can be enjoyed in just over an hour.
Route Grade: medium. Distance 10km.
  Rowarth Circuit
This route warms up along country lanes before cutting across Coombes Tor, dropping down to Lantern Pike then up over the hill, around its southern flank to follow an excellent track and rocky descent into Rowarth. Route Grade: medium / hard. Distance: 13km.
  EPICS
  Bradwell Circuit
This route incorporates quite a bit of steady mileage but also throws in some well scary downhill - and an option to explore the Pin Dale 'Drop Zone'.
Route Grade: hard / extreme. Distance: 17km
  Disley Circuit
Using a cunningly linked network of bridleways, mainly rocky farm tracks to take in a variety of superb terrain. With the emphasis on climbing, this route is a very good test of fitness.
Route Grade: medium / hard. Distance: 22km
Ladybower Classic & Figure of 8
This all time classic is one of the best mountain bike routes in the Dark Peak. Challenging, technical climbs and exhilarating descent, complimented by brilliant scenery.
Route Grade: hard / extreme. Distance 20km plus option of additional 14km.
  Ladybower 2
Though only 19km this is a pretty hefty route with two notable ascents, one is a bit of a chore that gains height very quickly, the other is a different story and contains a couple of rocky sections that will test the best. The reward for all the effort is access to two singletrack sections that roll on for ages.
Route Grade: hard. Distance: 19km
  Mam Tor Figure of 8
Good short route making the most of the sensational riding along the ridge that connects Mam Tor to Rushup Edge.
Route Grade: hard. Distance: 15km
  Snake Doctor
Short and very very sharp would be the best way to describe this route. Very useful as an afternoon training route if you're local to the area this route will test both uphill endurance and, even more, your ability to handle a potentially very dangerous descent!
Route Grade: hard / extreme. Distance: 16km
  Wharncliffe
Welcome to South Yorkshire's downhill mecca!
This is a variation on the existing waymarked Black Route that misses out a couple of nasty overgrown sections and adds in a couple of the more accessible downhills for good measure.
Route Grade: hard. Distance: 12km
  ENDUROS
  Buxton
A superb, scenic excursion into the gritstone hills of the 'Honary Dark Peak' around Buxton.
Route Grade: medium / hard. Distance 25km plus option of additional 15km

One of the best routes in the guide. An unmissable opportunity to traverse this world class mountain bike track twice in one day. An out and back route with a tasty loop at the end.
Route Grade: Hard. Distance: 26km .

Hathersage Circuit
Lots of fast tracks with fantastic views of high moorland and interesting valley landscapes. Route Grade: Hard. Distance: 29km.

  High Peak Circuit

Route Grade: Hard. Distance 26km.

A superb, ultra-challenging route with a real 'wilderness feel'. It builds up to a spectacular finale crossing a 540m high shoulder of Kinder Scout and descending Jacob's Ladder.
Route Grade: hard / extreme. Distance: 22km.

Mam Tor Classic
A wonderful excursion that makes the most of riding across a complex of the high ridges between Castleton and Ladybower. Includes a couple of options to vary the route for future variety.

It's long, tough and tiring.
Route Grade: extreme. Distance: 62km
  Killer Loop - Hope Valley
A very challenging route which if undertaken is hoped it will be looked back on as a tough, thoroughly satisfying balanced day out with the emphasis very much being on downhill fun.
Grade|: extreme. Distance: 57km
  Lord of the Loops
This is designed for the athletic rider who has done everything and is seeking the next big challenge.
Over 100km of gruelling hilly terrain. Owing to limitations of space a sketch map is included for guidance only.
Distance 105km+. Route Grade: double extreme

A TO B RIDES
Use the train or get dropped off the choice is upto you. Either way there is something of a psychological advantage that comes with the knowledge that every pedal stroke is bringing you closer to home

  Edale to New Mills
A direct route across the highest pass in Middle England. Relatively short it is still a challenging route in the mountains.
Route Grade: hard / extreme. Distance: 15.5km
  Hope to Sheffield
A mountain biking delight with fairly mellow riding throughout, though there's a real killer of a climb near the end.
Route Grade: hard. Distance: 27km plus optional extra.
  SHEFFIELD CITY LINKS
  Link 1
A useful way to extend the Stanage Ride out from the city. Route Grade: medium. Distance: 5.5km

The way back in for those who used Link 1.
Negotiating the maze of back streets through Dore without getting lost is now a real possibility even for newcomers.
