Mountain Bike Routes:
Loughrigg, Elterwater, Hodge Close, Iron Keld - 17 miles
Miles of excellent bridleways including the thrilling descent from Iron Keld. Plus optional extension of 4 miles which continues along the Mountain Road from Iron keld
The Loughrigg circuit - 8 miles
Ridden in the direction described most of the climbing is on tarmac, whilst most of the descending is in rocky off-road, with some tricky sections.

2. Grizedale Forest

Mountain Bike Routes:
Coniston to Lawson Park - 8 miles
A long gradual climb into the forest is rewarded with views over Coniston Water and a fine descent past the abandoned farm at Lawson Park
The Rough Ride - 15 miles
After a relatively gentle introduction, this route leaves the smooth-surfaced forest roads to follow a series of tough, tricky bridleways

Claife Heights from Bowness via the Ferry - 10 miles
Claife Heights from Ambleside - 16 miles
Narrow country lanes provide a pleasant warm-up for an off-road tour of Claife Heights. There is great scenery and varied mountain biking, including a couple of superb descents.

Mountain Bike Routes:
Tough, adventurous routes into the foothills of the Eastern Fells . Some tracks are high and exposed - be prepared!
Staveley to Longsleddale 16 miles
A brilliant route with bags of variety, including a wild moorland crossing to Longsleddale and three descents to blister those brake blocks
Garburn Pass from Windermere - 16 miles
A tough but rewarding route, a slog in places. To ride the Garburn Pass without putting a foot down is utterly impossible!
Ambleside to Troutbeck - 10.5 miles
A hilly route with some tough climbs
Stavely to long Houses 7 miles
Most of the off-road riding is downhill, on the fine descent to Long Houses

The grand Tour - 29 km
An enjoyable circuit. The views are matched by the quality of the mountain biking which is interesting and entertaining on the bridleway sections
A Shorter Alternative - 19 km
The southern part of the above route, missing out the road sections around the lake, but including most of the off-road riding
Around Derwent Water - 17 km
A picturesque potter on surfaced roads

Mountain Bike Routes:
Glenderaterra - 19 km
Keswick railway cycle track provides a gentle warm up for the tougher though still mostly rideable bridleways that traverse the deep mountain valley of Glenderaterra
The Old Coach Road -38 km
Fast and enjoyable with nothing too tricky. The old coach road is the highlight of the trip, an off road high level traverse with great views culminating in a n exciting 300m descent
Shorter version - 26 km
Start at Threlkeld rather than Keswick

Skiddaw

Mountain Bike Routes:
Skiddaw House -29 km
The first half of the route affords pleasant on-road cycling. After this the going gets tougher on the landrover track to Skiddaw House. The return to Keswick follows narrower tracks with plenty of off-road interest
Skiddaw Summit - 17 km
The longest mountain bike descent in England! A surprisingly smooth, furiously fast freefall towards the chimney pots of Keswick. Unfortunately this also means the longest, most tedious uphill push in English mountain biking

Mountain Bike Routes:
The Circuit of Barf - 30 km
Mostly pleasant easy cycling on narrow country lanes and well-graded forest roads. The few bridleway sections are not too tricky. Despite this the route is varied and highly enjoyable
The Forestry Commission Cycle Trails , 9km or 11 km
These excellent routes follow smooth, well-graded forest roads. They lack the technical challenge of the rockier Lake District bridleways, but make up for this with pleasant gate-free riding. Ideal for beginners

Ullswater

Silver Point from Glenridding - 10 km
An easy ride to the viewpoint at Silver Point, returning by the same route
The circumnavigation of Place fell - 18 km
Brilliant scenery but hard, technical riding. Be prepared to push lots!
Howtown to Pooley Bridge - 22km
An enjoyable circuit from Pooley Bridge following lanes and pleasant, rideable bridleways. The descent to Howtown is one of the best downhill rides in the Lakes
Pooley Bridge to Loadpot Hill - 35 km
An adventurous extension. The ascent follows faint trods up a grassy ridge. The 10km descent to Howtown is superb
Bike and Steamer - 21 km
Take your bike on the steamer one way, ride back the other. If the steamers are not running, be hard and ride the extra 14km along the main road

Walna Scar from Coniston - 29 km
A ride of many parts. Bike mountaineering over Walna Scar, country lanes in Duddon Valley, grassy single tracks high on the Dunnerdale Fells and a visit to the depths of Broughton Moor Forest. Walna Scar is hard, high and hilly. Be prepared to push lots!
Shorter version via Yaud Mire Bridleway - 23 km
A short cut avoiding both distance and climb
Kiln Bank Cross 6.5 km
Short but fun with some fast grassy tracks
Blawith Fells from Torver - 22 km
A rambling tour of one of the quieter corners of the Lakes. Some excellent rideable off-road sections, with the highlight being the long, grassy descent of Woodland Fell

Kendal to Lambrigg Fell |
11. Kendal to Lambrigg Fell

Mountain Bike Routes:
An enjoyable circuit of the countryside east of Kendal. The country lanes are narrow, twisting, fast and fun. The bridleway section follows the airy crest of Green bank Fell, then makes a crossing of wild, heathery Lambrigg Fell.

option of two descents from Lambrigg Fell
Short route - 10 miles

Mountain Bike Routes:
Country lanes meander pleasantly through the foothills to the north of Kendal. The crossing of Whinfell involves a tough climb on tarmac, then a superb grassy descent into Borrowdale. More lanes and walled tracks return to Kendal avoiding the main roads
